Today’s quote is from Dale Spender, (born 22 September 1943) an Australian feminist scholar, teacher, writer and consultant. Her most famous book “Man Made Language (1980) is based on her PHD Research; illustrating how linguistic determinism interconnects with economic determinism in order to oppress women in society and provides a wide breadth of analysis to do this. Spender explores the assumed deficiencies of women, silencing, intimidation and the politics of naming.
What do you think of her quote?
Feminism has fought no wars. It has killed no opponents. It has set up no concentration camps, starved no enemies, and practiced no cruelties.
Its battles have been for education, for the vote, for better working conditions, for safety on the streets, for child care, for social welfare, for rape crisis centres, women’s refuges, and reforms in the law.
If someone says “Oh, I’m not a feminist” I ask “Why? What’s your problem?”
